Dear Colleague,

As nurses, our career options are so varied – more than almost any other career. Staff nursing, office nursing, correctional nursing, hospice, critical care, management, advanced practice, legal consulting, publishing….I could go on, but I think you get the idea! Of course, there are also all the different settings where nurses practice, from hospitals to schools to homes to military sites, and all the places in between. I feel so lucky to be part of this profession and so lucky to have so many choices. We’ve had quite a few great articles published over the past year which explore the many available career options for nurses. Take a look at the articles in More Resources – they are all free for you to read! One option for vaccinating against influenza is the use of live attenuated influenza vaccines (LAIV), which are administered via nasal spray. Listed below are the contraindications to their use:

Anyone with asthma
Children under 5 years of age with recurrent wheezing
Anyone with a history of hypersensitivity to eggs, egg proteins, gentamicin, gelatin, or arginine
Those who have had life-threatening reactions to previous influenza vaccinations
Children and adolescents who are on aspirin or aspirin-containing agents

The FDA has approved Berinert, a C1 esterase inhibitor (human) to treat acute abdominal attacks or facial swelling associated with hereditary angioedema (HAE), a rare and serious genetic disorder, in adolescents and adults.
