According to a report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, almost a quarter of new HIV cases are seen in young people, and more than half of them are unaware of being infected.
Assessing the risks associated with energy drinks
U.S. regulators are investigating energy drink manufacturers such as Monster Beverage Corp. and Living Essentials LLC to determine whether or not their drinks are dangerous and/or require regulation. Monster drinks have been linked to five deaths, while 5-Hour Energy drinks have been associated with 13 adverse event reports submitted to the FDA.
Mammogram screening guidelines leave women with conflicting advice
Controversial guidelines issued by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force in 2009 recommended that women ages 50 to 74 undergo mammography every 2 years; however, some researchers are now saying this can lead to many missed breast cancers.
Research suggests possibility to forecast flu outbreaks
Using real-time data via Google along with a computer model that shows the spread of influenza virus, researchers are able to offer a system that could create local forecasts pertaining to severity and length of a particular flu outbreak. This development could improve preparation and management of annual flu outbreaks in the United States.
