An aspirin a day keeps skin cancer away?
A Danish study of nearly 200,000 people found that those who took NSAIDs were less likely to develop squamous cell carcinoma or malignant melanoma. According to the study, published in the journal Cancer, the risk reduction was greatest among long-term and high-intensity users, suggesting a cumulative and dose-dependent protective effect.
Calcium supplements may raise heart attack risk
A new study in the journal Heart found that men and women between the ages of 35 and 64 who regularly took calcium supplements were 86% more likely to have a heart attack than those who did not. Subjects who relied completely on supplements for their daily calcium intake were 139% more likely to suffer a heart attack.
Health-related deaths drop significantly for patients with diabetes
Death rates for people with diabetes dropped substantially from 1997 to 2006, especially deaths related to heart disease and stroke, according to researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Institutes of Health.
Is marathon running bad for the heart?
Several studies have recently examined the question of whether or not marathon training or racing can damage the heart muscle. The latest, published in The American Journal of Sports Medicine, used public data to analyze the phenomenon of deaths during or immediately after every known marathon between 2000 and 2009.
