Abstract

This article describes the process of reorganizing an existing Nursing Policy and Procedure Manual. The process of restructuring the Nursing Policy and Procedure Committee and clarifying its priorities is also described. This discussion has significance for staff development educators because this type of project is often entrusted to them and few detailed guidelines exist for completing this task.

There are few things that staff development educators dread more than the prospect of totally revising a nursing policy and procedure manual, but this was the task assigned to the author shortly after she started a new position as Manager of Nursing Education and Research. The process was more difficult because secretaries had changed or support had been uneven over the last 2 years, resulting in documents being stored on three different computers. Locating documents in the manual was also difficult.
