Abstract

Kwashiorkor is a syndrome seen in children almost exclusively in association with famine in the tropics. It is characterized by rapid development of edema, hypoalbuminemia, and distinct skin dyspigmentation. Kwashiorkor presents a number of paradoxes; it is confined to pediatric populations in the underdeveloped world and within communities with comparable living standards in isolated households. However, the exact etiology of kwashiorkor is still unknown. Various infectious agents, toxins, and prooxidants have been all implicated in the pathophysiology of this complex condition. Inflammation from infectious stimulus probably has a crucial role in the development of kwashiorkor.
