Abstract

Calcium supplementation is a topic that researchers are seeking answers to determine the appropriate level of intake that will balance disease prevention with safety. The dietary requirements for calcium are increased, but the upper limit for older adults decreased, indicating research shows a need to tighten the margins for safety. Vascular calcification is a precursor to cardiovascular disease, and the impact that calcium supplementation may have on the progression of the disease should be studied. The research remains inconclusive on the role that calcium supplementation has in the progression of vascular calcification for healthy adults, and cautious supplementation is still warranted.
