We wanted to take time to remind you of an innovative and generous program through the JDNA's publisher. We are excited to remind everyone of the CE for Reviewers Program available through the JDNA. Wolters Kluwer Health/Lippincott Williams & Wilkins (WKH/LWW) is delighted to announce the continuation of a program for awarding continuing education CNE/CME credits for conducting peer reviews for the JDNA. For specific types of articles, you may be eligible to earn several continuing education credits.
To earn the credits, after completing a peer review for JDNA, you will need to answer the following four questions at the end of the peer review form:
* Are you interested in earning continuing education credit? (Choose physician AMA PRA Category 1 Credit credits, nursing ANCC Contact Hours, or both, if appropriate.)
* How long did it take to complete this review? (Select the applicable time frame.)
* Performing this review has improved my knowledge and ability to assess the scientific literature to make informed decisions in my practice. (yes or no)
* Performing this review has improved my critical thinking and writing skills within my area of expertise. (yes or no)
All questions must be answered to earn the credit.
The journal's editor will evaluate your completed review and assign a score between 0 and 100 to reflect the quality of the review. A score of 70 or above is needed to earn CE credit.
Here, for your information, is the behind-the-scenes story that does not require your direct involvement:
* At the end of each month, WKH/LWW Continuing Education Department personnel will download a report from Editorial Manager to include your responses and the editor's scoring.
* For reviewers seeking credit who have earned a score of 70 or above, you will receive a CE certificate by e-mail in about 6-8 weeks. Please note that certificates arrive from the following e-mail address: [email protected].
* In accordance with provider guidelines, nurses will earn ANCC contact hours commensurate with the amount of time spent doing the review.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT CE/CME FOR PEER REVIEW
1. What are the criteria for scoring a review?
Scoring a review is a judgment call on the part of each editor. Because journals vary widely in their scope and editors have individual expectations, one set of criteria cannot be formulated for all journals. The editor must decide whether any specific review is worthy of awarding CE credit. Communicating expectations to reviewers is up to each editor.
2. What happens if my review scores less than 70?
The journal editor should contact you to explain why the low score was assigned. Inquiries received by the WKH/LWW Continuing Education Department will be referred back to the editor.
3. Will I be able to earn credit even if there is more than one reviewer per manuscript?
Yes, any reviewer can earn credit for his or her work; it is not limited to only one reviewer per manuscript.
4. Nonphysician reviewers seeking CME credits will receive a certificate of participation in a CME activity that may be useful to your individual profession's CE requirements.
5. Can physician reviewers with international medical degrees receive credit?
AMA PRA Category 1 Credit may be awarded to any physician (defined by the AMA as MDs, DOs, or international physicians with equivalent degrees from other countries). WKH/LWW does ask what degree(s) reviewers hold and will provide a certificate to foreign practitioners if they provide one of the following degree categories: BMBS, MBBS, MBChB, MB BCh, BMed, MDCM, DrMuD, DrMed, CandMed, or Med.
6. Can I still receive CE credit if I indicate in the evaluation questions that I did not learn as a result of the review?
Yes. Although your evaluation is required, the awarding of CE credit is based on the quality of your review and is independent of the evaluation of your own learning.
7. Can I still receive CE credit if I recommend rejection or revision of the article?
Yes. It is the quality of the review that warrants CE credit, not the quality of the article.
8. If the article goes back for revision, is additional CE credit available for subsequent reviews?
No. Only the first review is eligible for CE credit.
9. What do I do if I have not received my certificate by e-mail after 2 months?
You should contact your editor to assure that the credit has been approved. If it has been approved but you have not yet received your certificate, call the WKH/LWW Continuing Education Department for more information:
