Conference Outcomes
If you were one of the lucky 2,100 plus attendees at the 4th Joint Clinical Conference at the Adam's Mark in Denver, CO, between April 8 and 12, 2003, you know what we mean when we say how energizing conferences can be. More than 900 nurses were in attendance, most of them either HPNA members and/or NBCHPN(R) certified. Some of the photos reveal the great fun had by all.
During the past few years, you have been telling us through evaluations, telephone calls, e-mails, personal contacts, and letters that you want and need a greater concentration of clinical content at your conference. In response to your recurring requests, HPNA has partnered with the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (AAHPM) to meet your needs. The planning committee for 2004 is well underway reviewing the submitted proposals in preparation for the January 21-25, 2004, event to be held at the Pointe Hilton Tapatio Cliffs Resort in Phoenix, AZ. Conferences are enriched by your attendance. Imagine the energy you would feel if 1,000 nurses were in attendance. Take advantage of the early registration cost breaks. HPNA Award for Innovation in End-of-Life Nursing Care
The HPNA Award for Innovation in End-of-Life Nursing Care recognizes the work of an HPNA member in developing an innovation that has resulted in positive changes in end-of-life-care.
AWARD
Two-year membership in the Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association, plus a $300 cash award and a plaque that is presented at the HPNA Annual Meeting.
ELIGIBILITY
Current member of HPNA. (Members of the HPNA Board of Directors and members of the Awards Subcommittee are ineligible.)
CRITERIA
An individual who has positively influenced end-of-life nursing care by:
1. Developing an innovation (product or process) in end-of-life nursing care AND
2. Describing the positive changes the innovation has made on end-of-life care
SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS
1. Completed nomination form (download from http://www.hpna.org or obtain from the HPNA national office by calling 412-787-9301.
2. Detailed written description of the innovation that presents evidence of the innovation's positive effect on end-of-life nursing care (limit of 2 letter-size pages).
3. Description of applicant's qualifications: education, employment, and professional memberships.
4. Two letters of support from individuals who are currently working in end-of-life nursing care. These letters should describe the innovation's effect on end-of-life nursing care.
JUDGING
The Awards Subcommittee of the HPNA Board of Directors will review all nominations and select the award winner.

DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION
The completed application package must be postmarked no later than November 30, 2003. Faxes and e-mails will not be accepted.
The award winner is strongly encouraged to attend the HPNA Annual Meeting in Phoenix, AZ, January 21-25, 2004, to receive the award in person. The recipient is responsible for all travel costs.
Certification Recognition Lunch
On April 11, 2003, the NBCHPN(R) hosted its second annual Certification Recognition Event with a lunch at the 4th Joint Clinical Conference in Denver, CO, inviting all certified nurses and nursing assistants. The program included:
* Highlights of the NBCHPN(R)'s 2002 accomplishments, presented by Jeanne Martinez, NBCHPN(R) President
* Featured speaker Judy Lentz, Executive Director, with her presentation on change "Do Sacred Cows Really Make the Best Burgers?"
* Formal recognition of those agencies providing tangible support for hospice and palliative specialty certification
* A drawing for 5 certification scholarships
Advance Practice Certification Update
The inaugural Advance Practice Nurse (APN) palliative care certification examination was held May 17, 2003. This examination is the result of a collaboration between NBCHPN(R) and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). The next APN examination will be held October 18, 2003. Successful candidates earn the credential APRN, BC-PCM. LPN Certification Update
NBCHPN(R) is continuing the process of developing hospice and palliative specialty certification for the LPN/LVN. An Item Writer's workshop will be held in Chicago on August 23-24, 2003. The target date for the initial examination is September 2004.
Judy Lentz Elected ABNS President
The NBCHPN(R) Board of Directors wishes to congratulate Judy Lentz, Executive Director, on her election as President of the American Board of Nursing Specialties (ABNS) from July 2003 to July 2006. ABNS represents certification nursing specialties, and reviews certification processes through a valid and measurable set of standards, providing accreditation to those who meet these standards.
Last Acts Report Recognizes the Value of Palliative Care Certification
Last Acts(R) published the first comprehensive report on the current conditions of dying in America, Means to A Better End: A Report On Dying In America Today. The report rated each US state with letter "grades" for each of 8 benchmark measures. One of those 8 measures was the number of palliative care-certified physicians and nurses. Last Acts(R) is a national coalition whose mission is to improve care near the end of life. The report is available for downloading from http://www.lastacts.org.
