Children's Oncology Group (COG) nurses develop teaching checklist for parents. The COG Nursing Discipline has developed a checklist to help teach parents and other primary caregivers what they need to know to safely care for children with a newly diagnosed cancer. The checklist is divided into three topic categories, and includes guidance on the timing of this education. Primary topics, such as medication dose and frequency, are considered essential to address before the initial hospital discharge. Secondary topics, such as effects of treatment, should be addressed within the first month of diagnosis; and tertiary topics, such as insurance issues, should be addressed before the child finishes treatment. The checklist can be found in the July-August issue of the Journal of Pediatric Oncology Nursing.
