Abstract

In 1990, the American School Food Service Association (ASFSA) defined the term nutrition integrity and encouraged school districts to adopt policies based on this definition. This article summarizes the revision process and the criteria used to redefine the nutrition integrity statement as a level of performance that ensures that all foods and beverages available in schools are consistent with the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. When combined with nutrition education, physical activity, and a healthy school environment, nutrition integrity contributes to enhanced learning and the development of lifelong, healthy eating habits.
