The Advanced Emergency Nursing Journal (AENJ) is the official journal of the American Academy of Emergency Nurse Practitioners (AAENP). As the premier organization representing more than 14,000 emergency nurse practitioners (ENPs), AAENP is devoted to providing timely information and the most up-to-date research necessary to support practice in emergency care settings. See http://www.aaenp-natl.org for additional AAENP information.

The AAENP Board recently published a position statement in November 2020. This position statement, titled Reenvisioning the Emergency Nurse Practitioner Role, discusses the role of the nurse practitioner (NP) in emergency care settings. This position statement also provides background information regarding NP practice, defines the patient population for NPs in emergency care, details the work of AAENP supporting and advocating for the role, and sets forth a bold vision for the future of the ENP.

It is the position of AAENP that the patient population served by the ENP represents a unique and significantly differentiated set of competencies from other APRN population foci. Due to the rapid evolution in emergency care delivery, and in collaboration with our national colleagues and regulatory stakeholders, AAENP supports the development of an ENP population across the lifespan. (AAENP, 2020, p. 2)
