Abstract

There is a bidirectional relationship between diet/nutrition and oral health. This relationship is very evident in the elderly. Functional disorders of the oral cavity can have a significant effect on oral function and health and consequently dietary intake. The aims of this article are to describe the multifaceted impact of conditions in the oral cavity on diet and nutritional well-being in the elderly, their manifestations, and strategies for the dietetics professional to use in assessing oral health and managing the sequelae of oral diseases and disorders through diet.
