Texas is a great place for RNs who're thinking of relocating. A booming job market, comparatively lower costs of living, and no state income tax are just a few reasons. In February 2006, the Milken Institute, an economic think tank, published the latest version of its city-rating guide, the Best Performing Cities [2005]: Where America's Jobs Are Created and Sustained. The McAllen-Edinburg-Mission area ranked fourth, behind three communities in Florida.

Another reason for nurses to like Texas is the very impressive Texas Nurses Association (TNA), which has several outstanding programs. One is Ready Texas Nurses, a Web-based, emergency response system created to facilitate nursing mobilization in times of crisis. Another is the TNA's Nurse-Friendly Hospital designation program. Facilities are evaluated according to 12 standards of ideal nursing practice environments. Nurses can check to see whether their facility meets the criteria.
