Abstract
An aging, growing population has contributed to an increased need for orthotic devices and services. Orthoses assist in the clinical management of a wide variety of pathologies and musculoskeletal dysfunction that can affect the geriatric population. The process of obtaining orthoses and orthotic services is multilayered and multidisciplined and can be overwhelming. Access to the orthotist and ultimately to the required orthotic device may also be impeded by accessibility to qualified facilities, travel costs, and insurance limitations. Medicare has specific limitations and exclusions to orthotic care that must be understood. Barriers to orthotic care can lead to noncompliance and avoidance of that care. Education is paramount to understanding the benefits, process, limitations, exclusions, and barriers of orthotic care.
