Abstract

Genetics and genomics are increasingly being recognized as fundamental to medicine and public health. Newborn screening and the identification of infants with disorders amendable to dietary treatment have created a discipline within dietetics that requires specialized knowledge and practice skills. As more is learned about the impact of a person's genotype on his or her response to specific nutrients and food components and how nutrients influence gene expression and disease risk, dietitians will be challenged to broaden their understanding of genetics and genomics and incorporate new treatment paradigms into dietetic practice.
