Abstract

Practical approaches to planning and implementation are needed following a nursing staff's identification of a desired outcome, a new priority for positive change in their practice or unit operations. A model for action planning and implementation is delineated, and an example for a tight glycemic control initiative in the surgical trauma intensive care unit is described. Strategies and challenges in identifying the desired outcome and specific outcome indicators are discussed. These skills are essential for clinical nurse leaders, managers, and executives to achieve quality outcomes and positive workplaces.
