Abstract

Necrotizing fasciitis is a rapidly spreading bacterial infection of the skin and deeper structures with high mortality rates. It mimics cellulitis but progresses to involve multiple organ systems rapidly presenting as fever with chills and rigors, giddiness due to hypotension, breathlessness, fall in urine output, and finally death. It is caused by Group A Streptococcus and Staphylococcus, or it may be caused by a combination of microbial infections consisting of both aerobes as well as anaerobes. A high index of suspicion must be maintained for early diagnosis and administration of antibiotics, which may be life-saving. We present a case of necrotizing fasciitis in an immunocompetent adult who had multisystem involvement on presentation but was managed successfully.
