Abstract

Patient classification systems (PCS) generate information that can be used to make decisions about the provision of nursing services. Expenditures for information technology are significant, but no previous research had been conducted regarding the actual use of information generated by an automated PCS. This article reports the findings of a study describing how and why information obtained from a PCS is used in hospital decision making and discusses the implications for nurse administrators.
