Article Content

Editorial Purpose

Plastic Surgical Nursing, the official journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgical Nurses, presents the latest advances in plastic and reconstructive surgical nursing practice. Written for plastic surgical nurses, Plastic Surgical Nursing features clinical articles covering a wide variety of surgical procedures. Patient education techniques and research findings are also included, as well as articles discussing the ethical issues and trends in this expanding clinical nursing specialty. All manuscripts should be submitted online through the journal's editorial manager Web site at https://www.editorialmanager.com/psn. See submission instructions under "Electronic Manuscript Submission."

Format

ELECTRONIC COPY: An electronic copy of the original manuscript should be prepared using a standard word-processing program (Microsoft Word preferred). Manuscripts should be double-spaced and have 1-inch margins. It is important to include page numbers at either the top or the bottom of the page. It is advised that authors retain copies of submitted manuscripts. The manuscript submission process will request you attach separate files for each of the following:

1. Cover letter including statement of authorship, notifications of conflicts of interest, and ethical adherence.

2. Author biographies (approximately 50 words each) of all authors.

3. Title page with the title of the article, all authors' names and academic degrees; the institution(s) each author represents; authors' current addresses (if different);

4. A complete description of any grants supporting the research; and the complete mailing address, telephone number, fax number, and e-mail address of the corresponding and reprint request authors, and disclosure of funding received for this work from any of the following organizations: National Institutes of Health, Wellcome Trust, Howard Hughes Medical Institute, and other(s).

5. Manuscript with no author information should include an abstract of not more than 250 words that briefly describes the ideas conveyed in the article, text body, references, and figure legend. Submissions should not exceed 20 manuscript pages, excluding references, tables, and figures. An acknowledgments section may follow the text.

6. Figures and photos submitted as tagged image file format (TIFF) or encapsulated PostScript (EPS) files. Images submitted at 300 dpi. Line-art submitted at 1200 dpi. Questions? Additional information (5 Steps to Creating Digital Artwork) is available online at http://edmgr.ovid.com/lww-final/accounts/5StepsforArt.pdf.

7. Tables, each submitted as a separate word-processing file (no Microsoft Excel).

8. Copyright form signed by all authors, then scanned and uploaded to Web site or faxed to journal office at (760) 945-7568.

9. Conflict of interest form. If the manuscript features a specific product, piece of equipment, or drug, the author should include a statement of his or her proprietary interest in the company that manufactures the product.

Style

Dorland's Medical Dictionary (28th edition) and Webster's Dictionary (10th edition) should be used as standard references. Scientific (generic) names of drugs should be used when possible. Copyright or trade names of drugs should be capitalized and placed in parentheses immediately following the name of the drug. The manufacturers of supplies and equipment cited in a manuscript should be cited in parentheses along with the city and state or country of the manufacturer. Units of measurement should be expressed in the metric system. Temperatures should be expressed in degree Celsius. Format style should be patterned after the publication manual of the American Psychological Association (APA), 5th edition, 2001, published by the American Psychological Association, 750 First Street, Washington, DC 20002. There are several software programs available that work with your word-processing software to automatically format in the APA style. Plastic Surgical Nursing does not endorse any specific programs. Some of the programs available include the following:

* Reference Point Software: http://www.ReferencePointSoftware.com

* Format Ease: http://www.formatease.com

* APA Wizard: http://www.APAFormatWizard.com

* APA Style Helper 5.1: http://www.apa.org/software

Authorship Responsibility

All persons designated as authors should qualify for authorship. Each author should have participated significantly in the conception and design of the work and the writing of the manuscript and be willing to take public responsibility for it. The editor may request justification of assignment authorship. Names of those who contributed general support or technical help may be listed in an acknowledgment.

Tables and Figures

Tables, consisting of straight, unadorned text, can be submitted in Microsoft Word. The camera-ready figures (diagrams, illustrations, and photographs) should be in black and white. The publisher reserves the right to establish a reasonable limit on the number of illustrations. Lettering should be large enough to be legible after necessary reduction. Tables and figures should be numbered.

High-resolution, camera-ready images (diagrams, illustrations, and photographs) may be submitted electronically as either a TIFF or an EPS file in Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop[spacing macron], or QuarkXPress[spacing macron]. Please save files in both the application in which they were created (i.e., Adobe Illustrator[spacing macron]) and as either EPS or TIFF files with a resolution of at least 300 dpi. Originals can be scanned with a high-resolution scanner and saved as a TIFF file. Use computer-generated lettering. Do not use screens, color, shading, or fine line. We cannot accept art that has been photocopied, is embedded in a Word document (has a .doc extension), was downloaded from the Internet, or was created in PageMaker. A laser-quality hard copy must accompany figures that are being submitted electronically.

Permissions

Written permission must be obtained from (1) the holder of copyrighted material used in the manuscript, (2) persons mentioned in the narrative or acknowledgment, and (3) the administrators of institutions mentioned in the narrative or acknowledgment. Where permission has been granted, the author should follow any special wording stipulated by the grantor. Please note that written permission must be obtained for the reproduction of photographs in which a patient is recognizable. Letters of permission must be submitted before publication of the manuscript. In addition, if using quoted material, the page number that the quoted material appears on must be included in the reference.

Compliance with National Institutes of Health and Other Research Funding Agency Accessibility Requirements

A number of research funding agencies now require or request authors to submit the postprint (the article after peer review and acceptance but not the final published article) to a repository that is accessible online by all without charge. As a service to our authors, LWW will identify to the National Library of Medicine articles that require deposit and will transmit the postprint of an article based on research funded in whole or in part by the National Institutes of Health, Wellcome Trust, Howard Hughes Medical Institute, or other funding agencies to PubMed Central. The revised Copyright Transfer Agreement provides the mechanism.

Copyright Transfer Agreement

All authors and coauthors must sign a copyright transfer agreement upon submission of their manuscript for consideration. In the event the manuscript is not accepted for publication, this agreement will be returned so that authors may pursue publication elsewhere.

References

References should conform to the following style: the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA), 5th Edition, 2001, published by the American Psychological Association, 750 First Street, Washington, DC 20002. A bibliography of references should appear double-spaced at the end of the manuscript, with references in APA format in the text. Personal communications should be cited parenthetically in the text (e.g., S. A. Jones, personal communication, April 1995). If a reference has seven authors or more, list the first six and follow with "et al." Any quoted material must have a corresponding page number, which will accompany the reference citation in the text.
