Abstract

Obesity is now a global epidemic that has resulted in the rise of bariatric surgical procedures performed worldwide. Bariatric surgery primarily promotes weight loss through dietary changes, yet many people also engage in exercise to enhance weight loss efforts and improve overall health. Despite the growing numbers of athletes who have had bariatric surgery, there is little research on the dietary needs of this population during exercise. This study surveyed the dietary and hydration practices of people who exercise and have had bariatric surgery (n = 113). Participants were recruited via social media sites to complete a Web-based questionnaire. Results indicated that athletes who have had bariatric surgery perform best when they drink water and use sports bars. Open-ended response questions revealed that participants want more information on menu planning and exercise program design. Practitioners working with this population must be aware of their unique dietary needs to provide effective counsel.
