The newly elected American Association for Cancer Research leaders officially began their terms at the AACR Annual Meeting last month:

Charles L. Sawyers, MD, is President for the 2013-2014 term. He is Chair of the Human Oncology and Pathogenesis Program at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator. He also serves as Professor in the Cell and Developmental Biology Program at the Joan and Sanford I. Weill Graduate School of Medical Sciences of Cornell University. He is co-leader of the Stand Up to Cancer-Prostate Cancer Foundation Prostate Cancer Dream Team: Precision of Therapy of Advanced Prostate Cancer, and is Scientific Editor of AACR's Cancer Discovery journal.

 

He succeeds Frank McCormick, PhD, FRS, Director of the University of California San Francisco Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center, who now serves as Past President. McCormick holds the E. Dixon Heise Distinguished Professorship in Oncology and the David A. Wood Distinguished Professorship of Tumor Biology and Cancer Research at UCSF.

Carlos L. Arteaga, MD, is now President-Elect, and will begin serving his one-year term as President in April 2014. He is Professor of Medicine and Cancer Biology at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, where he holds the Donna S. Hall Chair in Breast Cancer Research, as well as Associate Director for Clinical Research and Director of the Breast Cancer Research Program of the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center.

 

Newly elected to the AACR Board of Directors for the 2013-2016 term are:

* Mary C. Beckerle, PhD, Chief Executive Officer and Director of the Huntsman Cancer Institute at the University of Utah.

 

* Michael A. Caligiuri, MD, Chief Executive Officer of the James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute at Ohio State University. A member of OT's Editorial Board, he is also Director of the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center; and Vice President for Health Sciences, Cancer Programs.

 

* Hans Clevers, MD, PhD, President of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences and Professor in Molecular Genetics at the Academic Biomedical Center at the University of Utrecht.

 

* Elizabeth M. Jaffee, MD, Professor of Oncology and Pathology at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Associate Director for Translational Research, and Co-Director of the Gastrointestinal Cancer Program at the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins.

 

* Victor E. Velculescu, MD, PhD, Professor of Oncology at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Co-Director of the Cancer Biology Program at Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins, and Director of Cancer Genetics at the Ludwig Center for Cancer Genetics and Therapeutics there.

 

 

And, newly elected members of the AACR Nominating Committee for the 2013-2015 term are:

 

* Elizabeth Blackburn, PhD, the Morris Herzstein Professor of Biology and Physiology in the Departments of Biochemistry and Biophysics, and Microbiology and Immunology at the University of California, San Francisco;

 

* Kenneth W. Kinsler, PhD, Director of the Ludwig Center for Cancer Genetics and Therapeutics at the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins and Professor of Oncology at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine;

 

* Scott W. Lowe, PhD, an investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, member of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and Chair of the Geoffrey Beene Cancer Research Center at MSKCC.

 

* Martine J. Piccart, MD, PhD, Professor of Oncology at the Universite Libre de Bruxelles in Brussels, Belgium, and Head of the Medicine Department at Institut Jules Bordet in Brussels. She is president-elect and a board member of the European CanCer Organization and President of the European Society for Medical Oncology.
