The following individuals received the American Society of Clinical Oncology Special Awards at this year's Annual Meeting:

H.M. "Bob" Pinedo, MD, PhD, Professor Emeritus of the VU University Medical Center and a consultant to the VUmc Cancer Center Amsterdam, the Netherlands, received the David A. Karnofsky Memorial Award and gave the accompanying lecture. The award recognizes his work that has focused on original, translational cancer research combining basic and clinical science; his service as a founder of the Center for Translational Molecular Medicine in Eindhoven, the Netherlands (2006); and his service as President of the European Society of Medical Oncology (1987 to 1989).

Harald zur Hausen, MD, received the Science of Oncology Award and presented the accompanying lecture, "Do some human cancers originate from infections transmitted from domestic animals?" Hausen is a virologist and cancer researcher whose work has focused on the role of the human papillomavirus in cervical cancer. His research in the 1970s and 1980s paved the way for the development of the HPV vaccine in 2006, and he received the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 2008 for that achievement. He has previously served as Scientific Director of the German Cancer Research Center (1983 to 2003) and as Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Cancer (2000 to 2009).

Graham A. Colditz, MD, DrPH, the Niess-Gain Professor of Surgery and Professor of Medicine, Chief of the Division of Public Health Sciences in the Department of Surgery, and Deputy Director of the Institute for Public Health, all at Washington University in St. Louis, received the ASCO-American Cancer Society Award and presented the accompanying lecture, "Carpe diem: Time to seize the opportunity for cancer prevention." His research has focused on the causes and prevention of chronic disease, particularly among women; and he continues to pursue approaches to the translation of epidemiologic data to improve risk stratification and tailor prevention messages and screening strategies.

HARALD ZUR HAUSEN, MD. HARALD ZUR HAUSEN, MD

Stuart M. Lichtman, MD, FACP, an Attending Physician at Memorial Hospital for Cancer and Allied Diseases, a member of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center as well as the 65+ Clinical Geriatric Group at MSKCC (of which he was Chair from 2006 to 2009), and Professor of Medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College, received the B.J. Kennedy Award for Scientific Excellence in Geriatric Oncology, and presented the accompanying lecture, "Adventures in geriatric oncology: Inspirations, lessons learned, and hopes for the future." The award recognizes an ASCO member who has made outstanding contributions to the research, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer in the elderly-and brings an understanding of geriatric oncology to fellows and junior faculty. In addition to his roles at MSKCC and Weill Cornell, Lichtman is currently involved the Elderly Task Force of the Gynecologic Oncology Group and the Cancer and Aging Research Group, and is on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Geriatric Oncology.

Jaime de la Garza, MD, Executive Secretary of the Science Advisory Council for the President of the Mexican Republic and Clinical Research Investigator at Instituto Nacional de Cancerologia in Tlalpan, Mexico, received the Distinguished Achievement Award, which recognizes leadership or mentorship by a scientist, practitioner, or researcher in any subspecialty of oncology that has benefited ASCO members and/or their patients. De la Garza, a leader of medical oncology in Mexico, has authored some 200 articles as well as the book Relato Historico de la Oncologia Medica en Mexico; and he lectures internationally throughout the world.

STUART M. LICHTMAN, MD, FACP. STUART M. LICHTMAN, MD, FACP

Michael H. Levy, MD, PhD, Professor and Vice-Chair of the Department of Medical Oncology at Fox Chase Cancer Center, Medical Director of Payer Relations at Fox Chase, and Professor of Medicine at Temple University School of Medicine, received the Excellence in Teaching Award-a new award this year that recognizes an ASCO member who has had a demonstrable impact on trainees and has inspired and shaped their practice of cancer medicine. Levy, a master trainer for ASCO's Education for End-of-Life Care-Oncology train-the-trainer program and a member of ASCO's Supportive Care Guidelines Advisory Group, developed and led the Lippincott Family Hospice Program, the Pain and Palliative Care Program, and the Medical Ethics Committee at Fox Chase.

JAIME DE LA GARZA, MD. JAIME DE LA GARZA, MD

Aron Goldhirsch, MD, Director of the Multidisciplinary Program of Senology and Deputy Scientific Director at the European Institute of Oncology in Milan, and Professor of Medical Oncology at the University of Bern, received the Gianni Bonadonna Breast Cancer Award and presented the accompanying lecture. The award recognizes an active clinical and/or translational researcher with a distinguished record of accomplishments in advancing the field of breast cancer and who has exceptional mentoring abilities. Goldhirsch's research focuses on new adjuvant treatments for breast cancer, defining biologic features that predict responsiveness or resistance to anticancer treatments, and quality-of-life-oriented approaches.

MICHAEL S. KATZ, MBA. MICHAEL S. KATZ, MBA

Surendra S. Shastri, MBBS, MD, DPh, DHA, Professor and Head of the Department of Preventive Oncology at Tata Memorial Centre in Mumbai, India, received the Humanitarian Award, which recognizes an oncologist who personifies ASCO's mission and values by going above and beyond the call of duty in providing outstanding patient care through innovative means or exceptional service or leadership. He heads the World Health Organization's Collaborating Centre for Cancer Prevention, Screening, and Early Detection, often serving on WHO's expert panels for cancer and noncommunicable diseases.

ARON GOLDHIRSCH, MD. ARON GOLDHIRSCH, MD

James O. Armitage, MD, the Joe Shapiro Professor of Medicine at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, received the Special Recognition Award, which recognizes the achievements of an individual whose research and innovations have had a transforming and lasting effect in areas of clinical oncology, cancer research, clinical trials, and patient advocacy activities, or outstanding long-term service to ASCO and to clinical oncology. Armitage has served terms as President of both ASCO and the American Society of Blood and Marrow Transplantation. He developed and directed the bone marrow transplant programs at the University of Iowa and later at the University of Nebraska, where he also served as Vice Chair of Internal Medicine, Chief of the Section of Oncology and Hematology, Chair of the Department of Internal Medicine, and Dean of the College of Medicine.

Michael S. Katz, MBA, Vice President of the International Myeloma Foundation, received the Partners in Progress Award, which recognizes a person involved in patient advocacy activities that have an impact on public awareness about cancer, its causes, cures, or treatment, or activities that result in additional support-either legislatively or fiscally-for cancer research, treatment, prevention, or care. Katz also serves as Chairman of the Patient Representatives Committee at the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group, the National Cancer Institute's Director's Consumer Liaison Group, and the Association of Cancer Online Resources.

Leslie L. Robinson, PhD, Associate Director for Cancer Prevention and Control at St. Jude Comprehensive Cancer Center and Chair of the Department of Epidemiology and Cancer Control at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, received the Pediatric Oncology Award and presented the accompanying lecture, "Childhood cancer survivors: A lifetime of risk and responsibility." The award recognizes the career and achievements of an individual who has contributed outstanding scientific work-either laboratory, clinical, or epidemiologic-to the field of pediatric oncology. Robinson is the principal investigator of the Childhood Cancer Survivor Study, which began in 1994 and is evaluating a cohort of more than 35,000 five-year survivors of childhood cancer diagnosed between 1970 and 1999. Robinson also established the St. Jude Lifetime Cohort, providing lifelong comprehensive systematic medical assessments of long-term survivors of childhood cancer.

U.S. Representative John C. Carney, Jr. (D-DE) received the Public Service Award. As Lieutenant Governor, he worked to pass the Delaware smoking ban and led the passage of the Cancer Right to Know law. He is a member of the Advisory Committee and the former Chair of the Disparities Committee of the Delaware Cancer Consortium, and also worked on the national level to address prescription drug shortages by proposing several reforms in the Prescription Drug User Fee Authorization designed to provide doctors and patients with more access to needed medications.

Also at the Annual Meeting, the following individuals received Special Merit Awards from ASCO's Conquer Cancer Foundation for receiving the highest ranking scores in their respective abstract categories as determined by the ASCO Scientific Program Committee:

* Joshua Zeidner, MD, of Johns Hopkins University, received the Bradley Stuart Beller Special Merit Award for the highest ranked abstract overall, "Randomized multicenter phase II trial of timed-sequential therapy with flavopiridol (alvocidib), cytarabine, and mitoxantrone (FLAM) verus "7+3" for adults with newly diagnosed acute myeloid leukemia" (Abstract 7002);

* Renata Amorim, BS, of the Faculdade de Ciencias Medicas da Santa Casa de Sao Paulo, received the Brigid Leventhal Merit Award for the top-ranking abstract in pediatric oncology, "Increased risk of second malignant neoplasms in young children with embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma: Evidence for a cancer predisposition syndrome" (Abstract 10042);

* Cesar A. Santa-Maria, MD, of Johns Hopkins University, received the Pain and Symptom Management Award for the highest-ranked abstract in pain management research, "A phase II study evaluating efficacy of zoledronic acid in prevention of aromatase inhibitor-associated musculoskeletal symptoms: The ZAP trial" (Abstract 9615); and

* Andrew E. Place, MD, PhD, of Dana Farber Cancer Institute, received the James B. Nachman ASCO Junior Faculty Award in Pediatric Oncology for the top-ranking abstract submitted by a junior faculty member in pediatric oncology, "Outcome of childhood T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL): Results from DFCI protocol 05-001" (Abstract 10015)."
