Upsurge in Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) linked to inadequate infection control. A World Health Organization (WHO) team conducted a five-day investigation in the United Arab Emirates into measures being used to control and prevent the spread of MERS. The WHO concluded that the increase had been caused by a combination of factors, including breaches in infection prevention and control practices in health care settings, and inadequate active surveillance.
