Abstract

Sexual intimacy may be the most private aspect of life, a topic commonly avoided between sex partners or even between a patient and his or her medical professional. Most of the time, sex is an interpersonal experience, occurring within a couple. The physical, emotional, and relationship challenges that often accompany the aging process may add complexity to one's sexual experience and expression. This article explores some potential interpersonal variables that can impact sexual satisfaction and function with age. As the numbers of seniors continue to rise, health practitioners will be increasingly called upon to assist these patients with their sexual concerns.
