Abstract
Critically ill patients are often admitted to the intensive care unit with preexisting pressure ulcers or are at high risk for developing them. In today's challenging health care arena, the critical care nurse must have a comprehensive understanding of the support surfaces available. The support surface industry can be complex, confusing, and ever changing. This article summarizes the support surfaces available and offers suggestions for appropriate utilization of these products.
