Mothers who intend to use safe sleep positions for infants may not follow through. A recent study examining safe infant sleep practices found that many mothers still use unsafe sleep positions for their infants, and that social norms influence these decisions. About 3,300 mothers responded to a survey to determine whether they placed their infants on their back, side, or stomach. About 77% said they used the supine position, as recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics; however, more than half said they did not use that position exclusively. The full report appeared in the September issue of Pediatrics.
