Thank you for your May editorial, "What Nurses Do." I haven't practiced as an RN in a hospital since 2010, but I fondly recall how much I enjoyed working with acutely ill adults in those academic medical centers, providing care and comfort to them and their loved ones.

I am about to begin a tenure-track assistant professor position at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and have been reflecting a great deal on the work of RNs, advanced practice RNs, and nurse scientists. You very accurately present what RNs engaged in hospital work do: critically evaluate and assess patients' responses, which you call "watchfulness." That skill, which I honed during my first RN staff position, has served me well in subsequent academic and clinical settings.

Thank you for reminding me what it is nurses do (it can get buried by any number of daily tasks) and why I love doing it!
