The American Academy of Emergency Nurse Practitioners (AAENP) created emergency nurse practitioner (ENP) scope and standards of practice in 2016 (AAENP, 2016). Concurrently, a practice analysis, formerly known as a role delineation study, was also conducted (American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Board, 2018). The data analyzed from this practice analysis are the underpinning for the new practice standards herein, Practice Standards for the Emergency Nurse Practitioner. Practice standards "define the provision of competent care and foundations of patient care management for a specialty practice and support evaluation of clinician proficiency by providing measurable outcomes that can be used to assess evolving clinical abilities through the spectrum of novice to expert" ("Practice standards", 2018, pgs 240-245). Please be sure to read these practice standards in their entity. These practice standards are the basis for what we do and how we practice in emergency care.
