HAEWOOK HAN, PHD, RD, WINS NKF AWARD

Congratulations to Haewook Han, PhD, RD, for being the recipient of the National Kidney Foundation's Council on Renal Nutrition Recognized Renal Dietitian Award. Han is a new editorial board member of Nutrition Today. She was a 1981 graduate of Hanyang University in Seoul Korea, completed her master's in nutrition biochemistry at Tufts University in Boston, and earned her master's degree in medical science at Emory University in Atlanta with clinical nutrition training. She completed her doctorate degree at Tufts University Friedman School of Nutrition with specialization in renal nutrition, specifically B vitamins and cardiovascular risks among post-renal transplant patients. Her work background involves practicing as a renal dietitian in various dialysis units for many years. Currently, she works as a renal nutrition specialist at the Department of Nephrology at Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates for chronic kidney disease (CKD) and kidney stone patients as well as at the TMC Division of Nephrology. Throughout her career, Han has developed various nutritional education materials geared for CKD patients. In addition, she published a popular article on CKD and kidney stones that appeared in Nutrition Today. Other projects in which she has been involved include being a member of the National Kidney Foundation's Journal of Renal Nutrition editorial board and acting as a consultant in dialysis clinics to develop standardized practice for renal dietitians' participation in a community-based CKD screening project.

 

ACADEMY OF NUTRITION AND DIETETICS HONORS 8 MEMBERS WITH MEDALLION AWARDS

Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics has awarded Medallion Awards to 8 registered dietitian nutritionists in recognition of outstanding service and leadership in the academy and the nutrition and dietetics profession. ILSI NA NAMES DR CLAIRE THORP AS ITS NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

The International Life Sciences Institute's (ILSI's) North America has announced the appointment of Dr Claire Thorp as its executive director. Dr Thorp brings 25 years of public and private sector experience in agriculture and food policy, research, and teaching. Her career embodies ILSI's multisector philosophy, having served in academic positions in the United Kingdom, in government positions in Ireland, and in science-based associations in the United States. She is a native of Ireland and studied agriculture in college. She received her master's degree from Trinity College, Queens University Belfast, and her PhD from Queens University Belfast. She served as an agricultural inspector in the Irish Department of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food and as an agricultural attache in the Irish Embassy in Washington, DC. Thorp was also the managing director of the industrial and environmental section of the national Biotechnology Industry Organization in Washington. Congratulations, Dr Thorpe!

RETIREMENT

Nutrition Today wishes Moshen Meydani DVM PhD a happy retirement. Meydani was a professor of nutrition at Tufts University's Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy and a senior scientist and director of the Vascular Biology Laboratory at the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University where he conducted research in the area of dietary antioxidants and oxidative stress in vascular function, aging, and age-related diseases. Dr Meydani received his doctor of veterinary medicine degree from Tehran University in 1972 and his PhD in nutrition from Iowa State University in 1982. Dr Meydani directs studies at the cellular, animal, and human clinical trials levels. Specifically, his research focussed on the molecular mechanisms of dietary antioxidants including vitamins E and C, carotenoids, and polyphenols, as well as oxidative stress and vascular function in relation to the development of atherosclerosis and angiogenesis, which play critical roles in the development and progression of cardiovascular disease and tumors. He published more than 120 publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals and more than 60 reviews and book chapters. In addition, he was coeditor of 2 volumes of proceedings for 2 landmark meetings of the New York Academy of Sciences. Meydani received numerous honors for his contribution to the fields of nutrition and aging. In 1996, he was recognized for Outstanding Achievement among the Tufts University Faculty, and he received the USDA Manuscript of the Year award for 1990 and 1991. He was selected in 2001 to present the Boyd Orr Lecture at the British Nutrition Society Diamond Jubilee Symposium, University of Sheffield, England. In 2002, he received the Max K. Horwitt Memorial Distinguished Lectureship Award at Saint Louis University in Missouri. He served as president of the American Aging Association, 1995-1996, and served on the Antioxidant Advisory Panel of the Alliance for Aging Research. From 1991 to 2000, he served on the Board of Directors of the American Aging Association and was elected again to this position in 2006 and recognized as a fellow (FAAA) and FAHA. In 2012, he was also recognized as Fellow of American Society of Nutrition, and in 2013, he received the McCormick Science Institute Research award from the American Society of Nutrition.

 

IN MEMORIAM

Peter Pellet, PhD

 

Nutrition Today mourns the loss of Peter L. Pellett, PhD, of Amherst, Massachusetts, where he was professor emeritus of nutrition at the University of Massachusetts. His work focused on relieving child malnutrition worldwide. Born on April 14, 1928, in London, England, he was a child survivor of World War II. He later joined the British Armed Forces where he defused bombs. After his military service, he received his education at Borough Polytechnic in London and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. He did postdoctoral work at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. After several years of research in London, the American University in Beirut, Lebanon, and at MIT, he joined UMass Amherst in 1971 and later became head of the nutrition department, retiring in 1999. He worked in a postretirement position for an additional year. The primary focus of his life's work was combating infant and child malnutrition in developing countries and putting an end to world hunger. He was an active board member on the International Nutrition Foundation. Throughout his career, he consulted regularly with the World Health Organization, US Agency for International Development, Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, and The United Nations Children's Fund. During these consultancies, he frequently traveled to many developing countries leading humanitarian missions that focused on resolving the child malnutrition crisis. He authored the second edition of "Food Composition, Tables for Use in the Middle East" in 1970. He coauthored "Nutritional Evaluation of Protein Foods: Report of a Working Group Sponsored by the International Union of Nutritional Science and the United Nations" in 1983. In addition he had 67 other publications and 1438 citations. He was also an accomplished jazz pianist. Our condolences to his wife Amira Pellett and 3 children.
