Since the introduction of the first antibiotic, the quick development of resistance has threatened the efficacy of such medications. Improving antibiotic use is, above all, a patient safety issue. As frontline health care providers, nurses can become more engaged and take a leadership role to enhance antibiotic stewardship programs. The unrecognized role of nurses in antibiotic stewardship efforts is just beginning to be explored.
