The ADA issues new Standards of Medical Care in Diabetes. For the first time, the American College of Cardiology endorsed the latest recommendations from the American Diabetes Association (ADA) for reducing cardiovascular disease in people with diabetes. Blood pressure recommendations were modified to emphasize individualization of targets based on cardiovascular risk. Weight loss is recommended to prevent type 2 diabetes in overweight/obese people, and water should replace sugary and artificial drinks. Youths with type 1 diabetes need screening for disordered eating, and the use of e-cigarettes is discouraged in all youths. For patients with type 2 diabetes who need an injectable medication, glucagon-like peptide 1 is now the first choice, rather than insulin.
