The AAP issues a statement on comprehensive care and support for transgender children and teens. Young people who identify as transgender and gender diverse should have access to "comprehensive, gender affirming, and developmentally appropriate health care that is provided in a safe and inclusive clinical space," according to a new American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) policy statement (see http://pediatrics.aappublications.org/content/142/4/e20182162). The statement provides relevant terms and definitions, and reviews the epidemiology and mental health implications for youth who identify as transgender and gender diverse. Other sections focus on gender-affirmative care, developmental considerations, and access to health care, including the components that can be involved in the gender affirmation process.
