Miss voting when hospitalized? Not if these nurses can help it. Two nurses at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City helped get out the vote last November, when they assisted 46 hospitalized patients-including a woman scheduled for brain surgery on Election Day-in submitting absentee ballots. Inspired after helping a patient vote two years earlier, nurse Lisa Schavrien along with colleague Erin Ainslie Smith provided interested patients with absentee ballot applications, delivered them to boards of elections in the five city boroughs and neighboring counties and, with other volunteers, returned to submit the completed ballots.
