Abstract

This article explores opportunities to enhance the quality of life (QL) for older adults in the presence of declining physical ability. Although important, high functional ability is not necessary for high quality of life. Given the growing number of elderly with chronic disabilities, it is critical that we seize upon this distinction and discover ways to maximize the QL benefits of physical function through such mediums as spirituality, social engagement, connectedness to self, environment, and design of physical activity programs.

THE DEMOGRAPHICS surrounding geriatrics-news to no one in geriatric rehabilitation-have evoked changes in our concepts of health care, propelling us into an exciting time of growth and change. Perhaps the central challenge faced by rehabilitation practitioners working with the increasing older clientele is the common decline of functional ability with advanced age, often despite therapeutic intervention. This challenge calls for therapists to re-examine their contributions within the functional deficits of old age.
