On this month's cover, nurse midwife Caroline Fati Asigiri speaks with a postpartum mother at Ga West Municipal Hospital in Amasaman, Ghana. Asigiri is a mentor in a program to improve care for Ghanaian mothers and babies led by Jhpiego, an international nongovernmental organization that helps strengthen health care in developing countries. Jhpiego partners with governments, experts, and communities to train health care workers, with an emphasis on nurses and midwives as primary care providers.

We chose to feature this photo on our cover as part of our ongoing recognition of the Year of the Nurse and the Midwife. In this month's issue, AJN senior editor Corinne McSpedon profiles Felina Ortiz, a certified nurse midwife who works to promote racial and ethnic diversity within the profession-a key to addressing maternal and child health disparities that disproportionately affect communities of color.
