Abstract

As advocates of health promotion and wellness, it is the responsibility of every rehabilitation specialist to provide the best evidence-based interventions and patient education to prevent or slow the progression of disability and disease. Nutritional deficiency is included in the list of risk factors that rehabilitation specialists identify during examination. The purpose of this article is to review the literature regarding the important role of calcium in the American diet, the health risks associated with a lack of adequate dietary calcium, and the factors that contribute to calcium-deficient diets of older African Americans.
