Abstract

Lack of motivation and apathy are frequent problems in the rehabilitation of persons with dementia. Apathy is related to lower functional ability and poor relationships with caregivers. While related to depression, apathy presents separate challenges. Assessment instruments for use with persons with dementia include the Apathy Index and the Dementia Apathy Interview and Rating Informant Scale. Interventions include drug treatments, caregiver education and support, environmental enrichment, and use of personally relevant pictures.
