Denise Polit and Cheryl Beck continue their tradition of delivering an advanced nursing research product. The updated 11th edition adds exciting new chapters and is broken down into 6 parts, containing 33 chapters. This edition continues to provide a strong foundation for research and updates current practice applications for research and evidence-based practice. The addition of Quality Improvement and Improvement Science recognizes the role of these disciplines in research and evidence-based practice.

 

Extensively revised content includes instructions for collecting, apprising, and ranking clinical evidence. Attention to the structure, process, and appraisal of advanced methods such as mixed-methods research, systematic reviews, and meta-analysis allows the reader to participate as informed members of an evidence-based practice team. A comprehensive discussion of these advanced methods includes the recommendations of current publication guidelines and tools, directing the reader to the EQUADOR network or citing contemporary tools such as the Mixed-Methods Appraisal Tool and the Preferred Reporting Items of Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses tool. Throughout the text, the authors present contemporary research examples and provide links to sample research articles. This text may be used for undergraduate or graduate students, or as a resource for clinical staff, nurse scientist, and evidence-based practice teams to guide users through research projects or to enhance the critical appraisal of research reports. Distinguishing features of this edition is that it moves beyond what one needs to know and provided guidance on how to implement the key aspects of the research process. Updated chapters include topics such as planning a study, disseminating evidence and reporting research findings, and writing proposals to generate evidence.

Instructor resources include test banks, images, PowerPoint slide decks for each chapter and many full-text articles. In June 2020, The MIT Press announced the launch of Rapid Review: COVID-19 (RR:C19), a new open access, rapid-review overlay journal designed to accelerate peer review of COVID-19-related research and deliver close to real-time, verified scientific information. This publication supports the urgency and scientific rigor of new reports related to COVID-19. Traditional peer review can take weeks to complete, but RR:C19's editorial team, ledby editor-in-chief, Stefano M. Bertozzi, professor of Health Policy and Management and dean emeritus at University of California Berkeley, pledges to produce expert reviews in a matter of days. As Bertozzi explains, "There is an urgent need to validate-or debunk-the rapidly growing volume of COVID-19-related manuscripts on preprint servers."

 

The publication follows strict ethical standards, such as requiring that all articles published in RR:C19 must represent original work and should not be submitted for publication elsewhere. The work will provide an important service as it plans to balance the preprint model with rapid reviews so the world's researchers can quickly disseminate new discoveries that the public and professionals can trust. The goal is to accelerate peer review of COVID-19-related research across a wide range of disciplines and deliver dependable scientific information that policymakers, scholars, and health leaders can use. The unique program could balance the need for rigor with the need for rapid responses.

 

RR:C19 is looking for experts across a broad range of fields to review preprints and help us stem the tide of misinformation about COVID-19. Applications for those interested in becoming a peer reviewer are available on the website. Reviewer comments will be published as a contribution in the form of a review (the "Review"). Every Review submitted to RR:C19 is subject to terms and submission defined by RR:C19. As this is an open-access publication, reviews will be published under the Creative Commons CC BY-NC 4.0 license in Rapid Reviews: COVID-19 (http://rapidreviewscovid19.mitpress.mit.edu).

 

RR:C19 is published by The MIT Press with financial support from the Patrick J. McGovern Foundation and edited by a team from UC Berkeley. The editorial team works with the COVID Scholar Team based at UC Berkeley and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. The scholar team has been an essential collaborator in the RR:C19 effort, creating a custom Rapid Reviews interface in a unique way, building on the COVID Scholar tool, which uses machine learning tools and artificial intelligence to scrape, prioritize, and organize preprints for subsequent review by the editorial team. The automation of initial stages of the RR:C19 process allows the editorial team to be modern, efficient, and user-friendly. Although this endeavor is quite new, the website offers many articles, reviews, citations, and podcast offering thoughtful new knowledge needed to transform health care during and after the pandemic.

The MIT Press podcast provides another format to introduce and discuss the new model of peer-review and rapid publishing. In this podcast, Amy Brand, director of The MIT Press, and Vilas Dhar, trustee of the Patrick J. McGovern Foundation, discuss this new overlay journal, its innovative goals, and its role as a proof-of-concept for this program.

 

The RR:C19 program is cosponsored by the MIT Press, which was established in 1962. As one of the largest and most distinguished university presses in the world, it remains a leading publisher of books and journals at the intersection of science, technology, art, social science, and design.
