Abstract

Research is needed to define the optimal amount of minerals required to maintain maternal mineral homeostasis during pregnancy and to endow the fetus with sufficient mineral reserves at birth. Multidisciplinary research approaches, combining whole-body stable isotope studies of mineral dynamics with cellular studies of mineral transporters at the placental level, will allow continued advances to be made on the control of maternal/fetal nutrient partitioning.
