Q: Share your professional background. How did you start your career in nursing, and how did you get to where you are now?

I began considering a nursing career when I was a junior in high school and later attended the school's vocational program called Diversified Health Occupations. It was taught by an RN who sparked my interest in nursing. I admired her so much, and she made me feel like I could do anything. I went on to a Diploma program and, 2 years later, returned for my BSN. I then pursued an MS in nursing and finally a DNP. Along the way, I have had many instructors and colleagues who encouraged me to continue my education and gave me the confidence to keep going. Of course, it did not hurt that I enjoyed being a nurse! I worked in cardiac critical care for the first 21 years of my career and transitioned to oncology 13 years ago. I developed an interest in leadership after being mentored by excellent nurse leaders throughout my career. They opened my eyes to the impact of nurse leaders and how to effectively lead despite the challenges they face in the ever-changing world of healthcare.

Q: What do you like to do outside of work?

I enjoy spending time with my family. I have a teenager who plays volleyball practically year-round and does track, so we are constantly traveling to her sporting events, which provides us with lots of meaningful and fun family time! My husband and I also enjoy sports, so it is typical to see us at a sporting event, especially football and basketball, at the high school, college, or professional level. I also enjoy reading and watching any good TV program or movie-I am addicted to crime and psychological thrillers but enjoy a good comedy now and then.

Q: What made you say "yes" to our invitation to join the Nursing2023 EB?

The two most important reasons for accepting the invitation to join the EB were the opportunity to come together and work with nurses with different backgrounds and experiences and to do something I had not experienced in my career. I also want to enjoy writing again since I became a little burnt out on writing after completing my DNP program. Publishing is another way to share all the incredible work we do in nursing. I have had the pleasure of being a published author, and it is some of my proudest work! I am currently working on a book chapter. I also want to encourage others to write and experience the satisfaction of becoming published authors while sharing their knowledge and expertise.

Q: What piece of advice would you like to give the readers of Nursing2023?

Although writing may seem daunting, especially the first time, writing with an experienced nursing colleague willing to mentor may be a good option. That helped me get through my first published manuscript. The other piece of advice is always to continue learning! Healthcare changes rapidly, and we are obligated as professional nurses to keep up to date with the changes to provide the best patient care possible!
