Many nursing programs use preceptors to enhance and promote clinical learning in diverse health care settings. When using clinical preceptors, nursing faculty are challenged to effectively communicate the role and responsibility of the preceptor in clinical instruction and student evaluation. State boards of nursing and accrediting agencies outline the essential requirements for orientating the preceptor to the role. Historically, preceptor orientation was accomplished by using a variety of methods including a physical handbook. The handbook includes a curriculum overview, courses, objectives, and guidelines of expected performance of the student and the preceptor. An alternative was developed to meet the formal requirements while maintaining current communication and promoting cost savings. A digital QR code was created using a free online QR code generator linking preceptors to the necessary clinical information and the school's detailed preceptor handbook. The QR code was printed on a standard mailing label and adhered to the back of the faculty member's business card. The content was reviewed verbally with the preceptor, and the online version provided a supplemental reference. While there was not a formal survey, general feedback from preceptors was overwhelmingly positive. Because the QR code is attached to the faculty member's business card, contact information for the faculty is readily available and communication is encouraged. The addition of the digital QR code has made a positive impact on precepted clinical learning experiences.
