Abstract
Osteoporosis awareness is important for nurses, their patients, families, and communities. Over 2 million osteoporosis fractures occur in the US every year, and up to one-third of patients die within a year of experiencing a hip fracture. Up to 80% of patients with hip fractures never fully regain pre-fracture independence. This article discusses osteoporosis risk factors, screening and treatment recommendations, self-help measures, and potential care gaps.
