This course describes various anatomical differences of the biliary tree by an experienced general surgeon who performs biliary surgery as well as performing and teaching endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). The history of cholecystectomy from an open incision to a laparoscopic procedure and a future natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery (NOTES) procedure will be discussed. Slides of how an ERCP helps to identify injuries incurred during cholecystectomy will be reviewed. Intraoperative and endoscopic therapies will be explored. The composition and characteristics of bile are also described.
