Due to an unfortunate situation, my geriatric NP certification expired. When I set about to renew it, I was informed that the deadline for renewal had passed and I had to retest with the adult/gero certification. BUT, I would have to take several courses in order to retest. Every single university or college I contacted either did not offer the courses or if they did, they required 500 hours of clinic time. And very few offered on-line programs. I have been working as an NP in California for the past 10 years. I'm so frustrated because I keep running into road blocks. I can take the courses, I found out, through Kaplan but each courses is costly. I keep wondering if there are others in my same situation. And I wonder, too, why the certifying agencies offer no exceptions. I am willing to test again. Shouldn't my ability to pass the test be a testament to my abilities? I a good nurse! I add to the body of our community; I would like to be judged on my merits. (Thanks for listening, er, reading).

Please note that along with the CCHP certification the National Commission on Correctional Healthcare (NCCHC) also offers another level of certification just for nurses...CCHP-RN. You can find information about both of these certifications on the NCCHC website.

Hi Vicki,
Thanks for letting us know about the certification in correctional nursing. We'll add this to our Certification Guide. And yes, that is a nice benefit from your employer!
Thank you,
Lisa Bonsall

Although my certification is not listed is your material, my employer pays all nurses certified in correctional healthcare (CCHP) a $50 stipend each pay period in recognition for our achievement. A very nice benefit!

Not all certifications/certifying boards are listed... Certifications in Correctional Healthcare are also available.

"sense of pride and the respect I received from patients, my colleagues, and my employer made it worth it" this quote alone makes you a great person.
