Dr Eric Hentges Is New Director of Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion

Dr Eric Hentges has assumed the directorship of the Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion at the US Department of Agriculture (USDA). Dr Hentges will oversee nutrition guidance at the USDA. Before accepting the directorship, Dr Hentges was vice-president of Applied Technology and Education Services for the National Pork Board. Dr Hentges has a strong track record in supporting nutrition research and evidence-based policy making. Congratulations, Eric!!

Elaine R. Monsen Named Editor Emeritus

The American Dietetic Association board named Elaine R. Monsen, PhD, RD, as editor emeritus for life of the Journal of the American Dietetic Association and designated October 27, 2003, as Elaine R. Monsen Day. A job well done, Elaine!!

 

NIH Launches a New ACCORD Diabetes Trial

The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) announced the Action to Control Cardiovascular Risk in Diabetes (ACCORD) study. The trial will investigate ways to decrease the risk of heart disease and stroke in people with diabetes. Approximately 10,000 participants with type 2 diabetes will be enrolled during a 6.5-year period.

Nutrition Screening Initiative Available in PDA Format

Doctors can now download A Physician's Guide to Nutrition in Chronic Disease Management in Older Adults from the American Academy of Family Physicians Web site (http://www.aafp.org/nis) into their personal digital assistants. This will allow them to use the evidence-based nutrition screening and interventions programs for eight chronic diseases found in the elderly population. (NSI, Winter 2003)

 

Susan Finn, PhD, RD, Named Chair of American Council for Fitness and Nutrition

The American Council for Fitness and Nutrition (ACFN) has named Susan Finn, PhD, RD, LD, FADA, as its first chairperson. Dr Finn will lead ACFN in its mission to promote programs and policies that emphasize the importance of proper nutrition and regular physical activity. Dr Finn was awarded her PhD in nutritional science from The Ohio State University in 1973. Previously, Dr Finn served as Director of Nutrition Communications at Ross Products. She currently serves as an adjunct associate professor at Ohio State, has coauthored two books on nutrition, and published professional research. Dr Finn is a past-president of the American Dietetic Association. She is a dynamic speaker and thinker and can be relied on to do an exceptional job. Congratulations, Susan!!

 

Linda Van Horn as Journal of the American Dietetic Association Editor-in-Chief

The American Dietetic Association announced the appointment of Linda Van Horn, PhD, RD, as Editor-in-Chief as of June 1, 2003. Dr Van Horn is professor of preventive medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago. She serves as the principal investigator of the Northwestern Vanguard Center for the Women's Health Initiative. Her research interests include diet's role in preventing cardiovascular disease and breast cancer. Dr Van Horn received her PhD in public health from the University of Illinois. She completed her dietetic internship at Indiana University Medical School.
