Abstract

Interest in sustainability has grown in the general public and in the nutrition practitioner community. Sustainability is a complex balancing act of considering social, economic, and environmental factors, while respecting cultural and lifestyle differences. Animal source foods, beef in particular, have received much attention in the conversation about sustainable diets and food systems. This review describes how beef is produced in the United States and how beef can fit into a sustainable food system and provides key considerations for incorporating sustainability into dietary guidance for clients and patients.
