In late 2019, a novel or new coronavirus was identified in Wuhan City, Hubei Province, China, and has caused illness and death around the world. This new virus outbreak was declared a “global pandemic” by the World Health Organization (WHO) in early 2020.
This new coronavirus disease, abbreviated COVID-19, is highly transmissible. It can spread through small droplets from the nose or mouth when a person with the disease talks, coughs, sneezes or exhales. COVID-19 can cause a
range of symptoms from the common cold to severe respiratory illness, such as fever or chills, cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, fatigue, muscle or body aches, headache, new loss of taste or smell, sore throat, congestion or runny nose, nausea or vomiting, and/or diarrhea. Vaccination and vigilant infection control practices are key to the prevention and spread of this virus and decreasing morbidity and mortality.
